  1. Steve: Liked your bandsaw box and want to build it real soon for a Christmas present. Do you have any instructions that I could follow to make the box? For instance how many boards? Finishing tech and such. Thanks Bruce

    1. Hi Bruce - Check out my bandsaw box video for steps. Five 3/4" thick boards would make the average size box. You can also use two pieces of 2x lumber with a thinner contrasting color board between them for a stripe effect.

  2. You like fun easy projects: have you made a guitar hanger for the wall? There is not many plans out there. Jon Peters has a nice you tube video on the subject, I was wondering what your take would be.

    1. I have made guitar hangers before. I recently purchased a Hercules hanger that I am going to mount on a decorative piece of wood, then mount that onto the wall for a nice appearance. Thanks

  3. Hey Steve, I fixing to start on the base project. Were you using a 3/16 4 TPI blade?

    1. Hi Jeremy - I use a 1/4" 4tpi skip or hook tooth blade. 3/16" would work too. The low tpi helps it make thicker cuts more easily.

  4. Where can I get the different color flock to finish the inside of my boxes?

    Thanks

    1. Hi John - Search for flocking at ptreeusa.com, woodcraft.com, rockler.com, and amazon.com. All of them have it. Get the same color adhesive and flocking.

  5. Steve, I watched your hat silk screening video several times and was looking for the platen plans that you mentioned. Unfortunately, I did not find them here. Am I doing something wrong?

  6. Hello Steve - I just ordered your plans for the scroll saw. I also wanted to complement you on that EVH 5150 paint job on your roll away tool box, really cool.

    1. Hi - Thanks for ordering the plans! Hope you like the stand. The tool box was my dad's and it was in poor shape, so I knew I couldn't get a factory finish on it. I thought the dents and scratches would go well with the EVH treatment.

  8. Steve,
I purchase the 10 scroll saw plans and look forward to getting started. I have the DeWalt saw. What blade(s) should I use for best results. Do you ever recommend spiral blades?
    thanks
    tate

    1. Hi Tate - I have used spiral blades for a couple of projects that required me to cut in all directions without turning the work piece. It takes practice especially for cutting straight lines. I wouldn't recommend it for projects with lots of straight lines.

  11. Just wanted to say thank you. I just started building bandsaw boxes and it was great to see someone who shared their plans (PDF). I am a 74 year old woodworker with no artistic talent at all. I mean I can't draw a square box then alone do a pattern. I can build anything with a plan just can't design a pattern as simple as a box! LOL Anyway I look at all the beautiful boxes out there and just wish I could draw them into a pattern to make. Thank you again for posted some of the box patterns. ron

  13. Hi Steve. I just completed a rough build of a tongue drum using your "Tongue Drum Pattern 5"...the one with the curved tongues. The top is 3/4" Pauduk and the box is 1/2" Purple Heart. I haven't started running yet, but there is one thing that seems odd to me that I don't quite understand. The longer tongues all resonate as expected, but none of the shorter tongues resonate at all. I find that odd since the longest tongue on the short side is about the same length as the shorter tongues on the long side so I'd expect at least that one to resonate about the same. I'm guessing it has something to do with the finger lengths and the short ones being too short to re-enforce each other, but was wondering if you had some insights? I have tuned marimba bars before and so am used to the shorter bars having much less sustain but these don't seem to have any sustain at all...which makes them doubly difficult to try and tune!

Thanks for any advice...and thanks for the patterns! I'm looking forward to giving this drum to my grandson :)

    1. Hi Brian - Out of all the designs I created myself, I only built the one that was in my video. The others were just some variations of that in different sizes/configurations. I think the length of those tongues are about the same as the one I made though. I did find that the smaller tongues didn't resonate as much on the drum I made. I think it's just because they are shorter. Someone told me a while back that the tongues should alternate between long and short so that similar length tongues don't interfere with each other, but I don't know how true that is because on a marimba they are in order from longest to smallest.

    2. Thanks for the reply!

On a marimba, each bar is isolated from its neighbors. On the drum, they're connected through the "sound board". I'm thinking that may be the difference here.

I can feel all 5 tongues vibrate when any of them are struck. If I hold my hand on 4 of the tongues on the resonant side, the 5th tongue acts like the non-resonant side. I'm guessing the total tongue length on the short side is just so different from the long side that the difference in resonance is significant.

The sound is interesting as one side is lower and resonate while the other is higher and staccato. Just not sure how best to attack tuning it :)

  15. Hi Steve. I have a question about trademark. For instance, your seahawks project-- would there be a problem selling that on facebook or craft shows, etc? Im not in scrolling as a business. Started about 2 years ago. Im 75 and love doing it. just started going to some cfart shows and a flea market. Steve good has a phila. eagles super bowl pattern, and i made one and put it on facebook to sell. Does that put me in a dangerous area? Would appreciate your advice please. Thanks.

    1. Hi David - I'm no lawyer, but from what I've heard, Trademark and copyright owners can ask you to cease and desist, and even file a lawsuit for damages to protect their property if they find out. Some companies like Disney and Harley Davidson are known to be fierce about it and really crack down on people. The bottom line is that you would be taking a risk. I think if you make something for yourself or a gift for a friend, it could be considered just fan art, but you do cross a line when you start profiting off a company's logo/image. The easy answer is to design your own stuff and have no worries.

    2. Another way is to purchase the Sports Emblem, then use it in your project. That is legal.

  16. Just printed the Oval band saw box pdf. I just have a brick of plywood glued up to practice on. I think it will turn out interesting regardless. Thank you for the PDF.
