This inspired me to try to make some wooden stockings that light up. In this video, I make a set of five cool LED stockings with the <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables X-Carve CNC Machine</a>. Inventables sent me their latest CNC upgrades, so we'll take a quick look what's new for the X-Carve CNC as well.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ETrozZ3rYoY" width="560" youtube-src-id="ETrozZ3rYoY"></iframe></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>I used the Inventables <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL PRO</a> software to design this project. The stocking is basically a box and the front and back pieces are cut from 1/8" Baltic Birch plywood. The side pieces are cut from 2x6 material, then it's glued together to make the box. <a href="https://www.inventables.com/projects/led-christmas-stockings?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my EASEL project for detailed instructions and to access my drawings.</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-icw3cRg8At4/YabY3IGIrII/AAAAAAAAEfw/bCNRzGN6tpMOnQFc1EIzpIGN8ObCBckHgCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog01.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="EASEL Stocking Design" border="0" data-original-height="274" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-icw3cRg8At4/YabY3IGIrII/AAAAAAAAEfw/bCNRzGN6tpMOnQFc1EIzpIGN8ObCBckHgCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog01.JPG" title="EASEL Stocking Design" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>I found a <a href="https://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-5-Pack-Color-Changing-LED-Puck-Lights-with-Remote-and-Batteries-4151/826093471?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&wl13=548&adid=22222222277826093471_117755028669_12420145346&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=501107745824&wl4=pla-293946777986&wl5=9010779&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=local&wl12=826093471&wl13=548&veh=sem_LIA&gclid=Cj0KCQiAtJeNBhCVARIsANJUJ2GXJXO_Y1s9lV9YOb8zUWS4fH12edv-DvRWrqkSTyGCywRZzUnHFh8aAiVEEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds" target="_blank">Set of 5 Battery-Powered LED Puck Lights</a> that fit perfectly inside the stockings. These make great gifts and craft fair items, and you might be able to find a local craft brewery that needs some. In this video, I make four different Beer Flights with the <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables X-Carve CNC Machine</a>. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/N6AnnvhNLlc" width="560" youtube-src-id="N6AnnvhNLlc"></iframe></div><br /><p>I used the Inventables <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL PRO</a> software to design these. Making beer flights is a perfect example of how you could use a machine like the X-Carve CNC to mass produce projects to fulfill a large order from a craft brewery. Of course you can also make these with other tools - <a href="https://www.inventables.com/projects/beer-flight-glass-carriers?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my EASEL designs and download the drawings.</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RiQmYV5eUWI/YLWWn-eYdII/AAAAAAAAEbA/zM7kSS9gaz06E1gHiB_TOlpB7qdRj1EhwCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Easel Beer Flights" border="0" data-original-height="272" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RiQmYV5eUWI/YLWWn-eYdII/AAAAAAAAEbA/zM7kSS9gaz06E1gHiB_TOlpB7qdRj1EhwCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog1.jpg" title="Easel Beer Flights" /></a></div><br /><p>If you plan to make a beer flight, I suggest buying the glasses first so you can get accurate measurements for your design. I bought these <a href="https://amzn.to/34FXJ4F" target="_blank">5oz Tasting Glasses</a> from Amazon. Below are three beer flights I made for these smaller glasses.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UJqwk7myENM/YLWX-dcz1sI/AAAAAAAAEbM/l0-SamTrStIP7VWmAh1bX7tMUiNfU83iACLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Beer Flight" border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UJqwk7myENM/YLWX-dcz1sI/AAAAAAAAEbM/l0-SamTrStIP7VWmAh1bX7tMUiNfU83iACLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog2.jpg" title="Beer Flight" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kvJK5YOrZuM/YLWX-R0nQrI/AAAAAAAAEbI/izEFmXjN9ic3sOfd-km5DXHJibbYPAEtwCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Beer Flight" border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kvJK5YOrZuM/YLWX-R0nQrI/AAAAAAAAEbI/izEFmXjN9ic3sOfd-km5DXHJibbYPAEtwCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog3.jpg" title="Beer Flight" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zXkXHigcLU4/YLWX-ffyjyI/AAAAAAAAEbQ/x5BQ04fX6A0WeRcaahFnpHwBcZmhfZhsgCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Beer Flight" border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zXkXHigcLU4/YLWX-ffyjyI/AAAAAAAAEbQ/x5BQ04fX6A0WeRcaahFnpHwBcZmhfZhsgCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog4.jpg" title="Beer Flight" /></a></div><br /><p>On my fourth design, I created EASEL designs for both the tasting glasses and the full size pint glasses. Here is the beer flight I made for the pint glasses. I like how the pint glasses sit in the holes securely and will not tip over when being carried.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J2CSdrQlHjM/YLWX-1tGfCI/AAAAAAAAEbU/X4ynhWXQAAsAkMVy2KSXjaZapyK62kTugCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Beer Flight" border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-J2CSdrQlHjM/YLWX-1tGfCI/AAAAAAAAEbU/X4ynhWXQAAsAkMVy2KSXjaZapyK62kTugCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog5.jpg" title="Beer Flight" /></a></div><p></p><p>Since these beer flights will be in contact with lots of moisture and condensation, picking a finish that will last will be a challenge. I used spray lacquer for mine which should be ok for periodic home use. If they will be used daily, I would recommend a marine varnish that is used on boats, or an exterior paint would last a while too. No matter what you choose, plan on refinishing or replacing the beer flights at some point in the future.</p><p>Thanks for checking out this project! Cheers! I challenged myself to make one with my <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables X-Carve CNC Machine</a>. It's made from 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood with holes in the top for routing cables under the board. Check out my video of this project below.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/h4_XRMlZPmI" width="560" youtube-src-id="h4_XRMlZPmI"></iframe></div><p><span>I designed this project using the Inventables </span><a href="http://easel.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL</a><span> online software. There are three cut jobs in the project, a Top Board, 2 Side Pieces, and a Front Cover. I used a pattern from the Easel Pro library to V-Carve a cool diamond pattern on the sides. </span><a href="https://www.inventables.com/projects/guitar-effects-pedal-board?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my EASEL project to see how it's designed and make one yourself.</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sQ7kuXcI2ec/YGQK9CBVZGI/AAAAAAAAEXM/oD_9oXrth-QV1AQLUEu5ZIUspgd8te10ACLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Easel Pro Pedal Board Design" border="0" data-original-height="305" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sQ7kuXcI2ec/YGQK9CBVZGI/AAAAAAAAEXM/oD_9oXrth-QV1AQLUEu5ZIUspgd8te10ACLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog1.JPG" title="Easel Pro Pedal Board Design" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It took about 2 hours of machine time to cut all of the parts using the default settings, which are very conservative. I glued the four sides together, then glued that assembly to the underside of the top. The bottom was screwed on for easy access to run the cables inside the board. I added non-skid rubber pads to the bottom of the board.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f7gmSMRPmcU/YGQK9HL1rYI/AAAAAAAAEXI/ohqI5n1U6wEaC32o2HyCvApv4EbwabFYgCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="CNC Pedal Board Glue Up" border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-f7gmSMRPmcU/YGQK9HL1rYI/AAAAAAAAEXI/ohqI5n1U6wEaC32o2HyCvApv4EbwabFYgCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog3.JPG" title="CNC Pedal Board Glue Up" /></a></div></div></div><p>The pedal board is finished with Deft Clear Wood Finish Satin spray lacquer. It was a fancy bandsaw box. I thought it would be fun to challenge myself to make one with my <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables X-Carve CNC Machine</a>. I designed a more modern box with shallow drawers and more compartments for separating the jewelry. I think it turned out pretty awesome! Check out my video of this project below.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-REI5270yVI" width="560" youtube-src-id="-REI5270yVI"></iframe></div><p>I designed this project using the Inventables free <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL</a> online software. The project workspace has 4 tabs at the bottom. Tabs 1-3 are used to actually cut the parts from 3/4" maple and cherry boards. The 4th tab contains my original design drawings so anyone can customize the design to fit their needs. <a href="https://easel.inventables.com/projects/FG0GWX5tt3LuyylicDHFwg/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my EASEL project to see how it's designed and make one yourself.</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T9LnmODdgkI/X-QKzz2ijgI/AAAAAAAAETs/5ltZTlXkdhkGg6Ri0k8lgU93V1vjXhVhgCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog01.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="EASEL Design" border="0" data-original-height="286" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T9LnmODdgkI/X-QKzz2ijgI/AAAAAAAAETs/5ltZTlXkdhkGg6Ri0k8lgU93V1vjXhVhgCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog01.JPG" title="EASEL Design" /></a></div><p>It took about 4 hours of machine time to cut all of the parts using the default settings, which are very conservative. I decided to pick my favorite signs that remind me of road trips with my family or landmarks in my hometown. Watch my video below to see which road signs I picked and how I made miniature versions of them my scroll saw.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/yUzueS2z0Gc" width="560" youtube-src-id="yUzueS2z0Gc"></iframe></div><p>When I was young, my family would pack up the Ford station wagon and head to the beach in Florida. On the way, we would pass time by playing a Road Sign Alphabet Game. Start by finding a sign that contains letter A and call it out. Then look for a sign with letter B. Keep hunting signs for each letter, then whoever gets to the end and finds a sign with Z on it first wins. I always wondered if anyone else playing this road trip game.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QKw8JrpGGvM/X8MHl-N3nYI/AAAAAAAAESc/WR5iTBEMlNsrajCscyULW3Axvi7dOEzrwCLcBGAsYHQ/s882/blog1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Holiday Inn Sign" border="0" data-original-height="882" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QKw8JrpGGvM/X8MHl-N3nYI/AAAAAAAAESc/WR5iTBEMlNsrajCscyULW3Axvi7dOEzrwCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog1.jpg" title="Holiday Inn Sign" /></a></div><p>These signs are made using a technique called "Segmentation". Basically, you place a cutting template on a piece of wood, then cut the parts of the sign with the scroll saw. Separate the parts to sand and paint them, then glue them back together to make the finished sign.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DejyM0RvnXc/X8MHl9qlJfI/AAAAAAAAESU/HZ_6e-bibHUgjwLwscTTJ8k6ryJoDoi-QCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="The Varsity Sign" border="0" data-original-height="373" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DejyM0RvnXc/X8MHl9qlJfI/AAAAAAAAESU/HZ_6e-bibHUgjwLwscTTJ8k6ryJoDoi-QCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog2.jpg" title="The Varsity Sign" /></a></div><p></p><p>If you would like to make some signs yourself, <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DVfxIT8nkly1cEhW7n-GlsOM0AgrBuAH/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">click here</a> to download templates for the signs I selected. For other signs, a simple Google Images search should find a logo or picture that you can use as a template.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_O8NaKGg8Fw/X8MHl3LwsZI/AAAAAAAAESY/LeLtAS4UD-0JZIPl2LiEn4I4bk_MB_iEgCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Big Chicken" border="0" data-original-height="473" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_O8NaKGg8Fw/X8MHl3LwsZI/AAAAAAAAESY/LeLtAS4UD-0JZIPl2LiEn4I4bk_MB_iEgCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog3.jpg" title="Big Chicken" /></a></div><p></p><p>These signs would make great personalized gifts for people. If you know someone who has a favorite vacation spot, restaurant, hometown landmark, or maybe is passionate about a company that they worked for, then make them a sign. These could also be used for model railroad displays if you can cut them to scale. Have fun!</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w0LaIBvC7Z0/X8MHmELCWYI/AAAAAAAAESg/6mkfcydoaRQtVmS67_wa4LV98AMpCNVBgCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Miniature Road Signs" border="0" data-original-height="271" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w0LaIBvC7Z0/X8MHmELCWYI/AAAAAAAAESg/6mkfcydoaRQtVmS67_wa4LV98AMpCNVBgCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog4.jpg" title="Miniature Road Signs" /></a></div><br /><p></p>The Carmichael Workshophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11621076031516847201noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8502782163100095998.post-57383626590272768912020-09-27T20:11:00.001-04:002021-03-31T01:50:12.265-04:00Make a Keychain Display Rack<p>Whenever I travel to some place new, I get a keychain for my keychain collection. I have about 50 keychains in a plastic bag that I would like to display in my office, so I decided to make a Keychain Display Rack. Check out my video of this project below.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XI27zKIh41A" width="560" youtube-src-id="XI27zKIh41A"></iframe></div><p>I designed this project using the Inventables free <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL</a> online software to design the project. I added the title of the Dr. Seuss book "Oh, the Places You'll Go" at the top and a grid of 54 holes. The text at the top can be customized or removed to fit more keychains. I used a precut piece of Baltic Birch Plywood that is 24" wide x 30" tall x .5" thick for this project. <a href="https://easel.inventables.com/projects/GTfHxPKGHoD4Iv6NJ3ASmA?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my EASEL project to see how it's designed.</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tSavBDdjW2c/X3ElQgFae6I/AAAAAAAAEQY/94ohbtuzkT0wJ8hne3N5uNikAoO3wd8pwCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog1.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="The Carmichael Workshop Keychain Display Design" border="0" data-original-height="272" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tSavBDdjW2c/X3ElQgFae6I/AAAAAAAAEQY/94ohbtuzkT0wJ8hne3N5uNikAoO3wd8pwCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog1.JPG" title="The Carmichael Workshop Keychain Display Design" /></a></div><p style="text-align: left;">I used my <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">X-Carve CNC Woodworking Machine</a> from <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables</a> to carve the letters and drill all of the holes.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dUdSP7gENpo/X3ElQhe0q1I/AAAAAAAAEQc/3JKyv3EHX4sJe70ldSLvRzlLR-9khT_bACLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img alt="The Carmichael Workshop X-Carve CNC" border="0" data-original-height="312" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dUdSP7gENpo/X3ElQhe0q1I/AAAAAAAAEQc/3JKyv3EHX4sJe70ldSLvRzlLR-9khT_bACLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog2.jpg" title="The Carmichael Workshop X-Carve CNC" /></a></p><p>I purchased enough Axel Pegs from Hobby Lobby to fill up the board and glued them into the holes. I used a small square to make sure they were straight. These pegs can hold several keychains as I expect my collection to grow.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DMmMPq27MLU/X3EmtEfHUvI/AAAAAAAAEQs/EO1Xz9qyYYcNP0Zn7-g_W2QdbnFWPQR3wCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="The Carmichael Workshop Keychain Display Rack" border="0" data-original-height="314" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DMmMPq27MLU/X3EmtEfHUvI/AAAAAAAAEQs/EO1Xz9qyYYcNP0Zn7-g_W2QdbnFWPQR3wCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog3.jpg" title="The Carmichael Workshop Keychain Display Rack" /></a></div><p>I trimmed the edges of the board with some 1/2" angle aluminum which looks really cool. These are mitered in the corners and screwed into the sides of the plywood. Did you know that you can cut aluminum with regular woodworking saws? I used my bandsaw.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pg9tbOZxKN4/X3En5e0jV5I/AAAAAAAAEQ0/-GbrTYG7aywpgc_gqyB9zTXodXyRui3wgCLcBGAsYHQ/s560/blog4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="The Carmichael Workshop Keychain Display" border="0" data-original-height="314" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pg9tbOZxKN4/X3En5e0jV5I/AAAAAAAAEQ0/-GbrTYG7aywpgc_gqyB9zTXodXyRui3wgCLcBGAsYHQ/s16000/blog4.jpg" title="The Carmichael Workshop Keychain Display" /></a></div><p>Below is the final project with all of my keychains hanging on it. I Googled it and learned that a Donut Wall is a fun, creative way to serve donuts at any party or event. It's easy to make with standard lumber from the home center and basic woodworking tools. Check out the video below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ypT6moQDyWY/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ypT6moQDyWY?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
If you would like to make one, <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_FSeLFeDbARqZu4fkETMhbFlyX9eZU6o/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">click here to download my free Donut Wall plans</a>. Here are basic instructions.<br />
<ol>
<li>Cut all of the boards to size according to the plans.</li>
<li>Drill evenly spaced 3/8" holes about 1/2" deep for the pegs.</li>
<li>Start from the bottom and attach the thin slat, followed by the 6 wide slats. Leave a 1" gap between each slat except for the top 2 slats.</li>
<li>Glue in the pegs so they are straight and perpendicular to the boards.</li>
<li>Attach the two legs.</li>
<li>Apply finish or paint as desired.</li>
<li>Customize the Donut Wall with a sign or banner for your particular event.</li>
</ol>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UogE-UhX4F4/XwpYO-SmE9I/AAAAAAAAEOU/-P_HKx_8-oIAX7p-ncT7sQTjyG010DP9ACPcBGAYYCw/s1600/blog1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="405" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UogE-UhX4F4/XwpYO-SmE9I/AAAAAAAAEOU/-P_HKx_8-oIAX7p-ncT7sQTjyG010DP9ACPcBGAYYCw/s1600/blog1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This donut wall has 20 long pegs that are long enough to hold two donuts each for a total of 40 donuts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SqEzRJQHgt4/Xwpafdh2K9I/AAAAAAAAEOk/W5QUwaVHHcY99ZR0ncIAeeVtHOXteAMDQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="373" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SqEzRJQHgt4/Xwpafdh2K9I/AAAAAAAAEOk/W5QUwaVHHcY99ZR0ncIAeeVtHOXteAMDQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog3.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The legs are cut at a 15 degree angle so the donut wall leans back. The size of this wall is perfect for a table top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XKqR4ass-QY/XwpafZSiYUI/AAAAAAAAEOg/T8jJAmvYy9UmedrH8GG4kNHGJNSyzdIOQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="373" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XKqR4ass-QY/XwpafZSiYUI/AAAAAAAAEOg/T8jJAmvYy9UmedrH8GG4kNHGJNSyzdIOQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The sign at the top can be customized to fit the event.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This Donut Wall was a big hit at the birthday party and the happy new owners will be using it for more future events.</div>

If a city had a Hard Rock Cafe, I would check it out and pick up a pint glass. I've collected glasses from 16 cities, so I made a custom display rack. Check out my video of this project below.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
I used my <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">X-Carve CNC Woodworking Machine</a> from <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables</a> to cut out the entire project.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I used the Inventables free <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL</a> online software to design the project. All of the parts can be cut from two 29" long sections of standard 1x12 boards. The sign at the top can be customized by simply changing the text. <a href="https://easel.inventables.com/projects/UM_Nk3vmWaVhEai_Ck2W9A?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my EASEL project to see how it's designed.</a><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I included dado cuts in the side pieces to accept the three shelves and also holes to make for quick and easy assembly with 8 screws. I added some hangers on the back and mounted it to the wall with strong drywall anchors.<br />

This display rack holds up to 21 glasses, so I will be able to add to it as I visit other cities with Hard Rock Cafes. I can look at each glass and remember the story behind it, such as how I got to the Hard Rock Cafe and what the place was like inside. Thanks for checking out this project!<br />

My favorite local Atlanta store was Turtle's Records & Tapes. They had a "Now Playing" rack on the wall where they would display the album cover of a record while it was playing in the store. I thought it would be fun to make one that I can use when playing my records. Check out my video of this project below.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/hpi-_XVGiWU/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hpi-_XVGiWU?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
I used my <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">X-Carve CNC Woodworking Machine</a> from <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables</a> to cut out the entire project, except for two small dowels.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yqu_8dROZ_w/XquGFaypbSI/AAAAAAAAEL0/868rJTE66zcmCZ_77OprJewa_e72vTOQACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="310" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yqu_8dROZ_w/XquGFaypbSI/AAAAAAAAEL0/868rJTE66zcmCZ_77OprJewa_e72vTOQACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I used the Inventables free <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL</a> online software to design the project. The project consists of a backboard with an engraved logo, and a separate "Now Playing" piece cut from 1/2" Baltic birch plywood. <a href="https://www.inventables.com/projects/vinyl-record-now-playing-rack?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my EASEL project to see how it's designed.</a><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I found the Turtle's logo on Google Images. Luckily, I was able to also find the matching font called Keep On Truckin' that I was able to use to type the "Now Playing" text. The text at the top is engraved with an 1/8" straight bit at a depth of 0.05". The X-Carve also drilled matching holes for me, so that I could attach the "Now Playing" cutout using two 2.5" long pieces of 1/4" dowel rod.<br />
<br />

This display rack will get a lot of use when I play my vinyl records. I love the colors and it brings back some great memories of hanging out in the record stores. Thanks for checking out this project!<br />

I have several guitars on display, so I thought it would be cool to make a guitar shaped side table to keep the music theme going. I used my <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">X-Carve CNC Woodworking Machine</a> from <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables</a> to cut the table top and legs. Check out the video of this project below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Yb4Z0nx1b40/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Yb4Z0nx1b40?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
I'd like to thank <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables</a> for sponsoring this project. I used their free <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL</a> online software to design the project. The top is cut from a 16"x24" panel of 3/4" walnut. The legs are cut from a 9"x21" section of 9/16" thick maple. (I had to plane the maple down to 9/16" thick so that the standard tuning pegs would fit. I also made the mortises 9/16" wide to match.) <a href="https://www.inventables.com/projects/guitar-shaped-side-table?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my EASEL project to see how it's designed.</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IMRfUBZI8dk/Xgk-BooyWsI/AAAAAAAAEIU/3of7xGtriUE7oZcN9awtsChaJM4fhwF9ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="274" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IMRfUBZI8dk/Xgk-BooyWsI/AAAAAAAAEIU/3of7xGtriUE7oZcN9awtsChaJM4fhwF9ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_Xd6COYE54U/Xgk-BjkoMcI/AAAAAAAAEIM/m1tfPDGPUnMoZVJUZSI0fvxVeJrX1mAaACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="274" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_Xd6COYE54U/Xgk-BjkoMcI/AAAAAAAAEIM/m1tfPDGPUnMoZVJUZSI0fvxVeJrX1mAaACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The design includes the mortise and tenon joinery for gluing the legs into the table top. The CNC leaves rounded inside corners on the tenons, so those need to be sharpened up with a chisel, file or saw so the joint will fit tightly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W5LAAZ39ABE/Xgk-4lJWytI/AAAAAAAAEIo/C53W9pmBJXoAgy8fyhiNdyvAwGNb1qLFwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="319" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-W5LAAZ39ABE/Xgk-4lJWytI/AAAAAAAAEIo/C53W9pmBJXoAgy8fyhiNdyvAwGNb1qLFwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I purchased an inexpensive set of <a href="https://www.cbgitty.com/guitar-instrument-parts/cigar-box-guitar-parts/chrome-sealed-gear-guitar-tuners-machine-heads-6pc-3-left-3-right/" target="_blank">Guitar Tuners from CB Gitty</a>. You will notice that one of the holes in the scaled-down guitar neck legs is larger than the others. This is to mount one of the standard size guitar tuners on each leg. I strung up a regular .042" A string between the tuners for some additional support to keep the legs from spreading apart under weight. The .056" E string would be a little stronger and more visible, but I didn't have one on hand.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6Qsc0KJKHh0/Xgk-CUYCOPI/AAAAAAAAEIc/Lrvt3mTaIXUnrKtpHznS1uROEwD3p_4QACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/inv4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="347" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6Qsc0KJKHh0/Xgk-CUYCOPI/AAAAAAAAEIc/Lrvt3mTaIXUnrKtpHznS1uROEwD3p_4QACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/inv4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
This Guitar Side Table is a great addition to my office/music room. I love it and it's a great conversation piece. The walnut and maple look beautiful and I think the "stringer" at the bottom is pretty clever if I do say so myself. Thanks for checking out my project!<br />

I collect the Funko Pop Rocks series that features members of awesome rock bands, like KISS and Metallica. I thought it would be cool to make a concert stage set to display them on, so check out my video below, then read on for more information about this fun project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VUB9QEzZwC8/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VUB9QEzZwC8?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
I'd like to thank <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables</a> for sponsoring this project and providing me with the <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">X-Carve CNC Machine</a> that made this a snap to build. I used their free <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL</a> online software to design the project, then the machine cut it from a single 1x12 pine board (.75"x11.25"x27"). <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/projects/1zSz7MOkFfkLYKK2BLhVYQ?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my EASEL project to see how it's designed.</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hItTxICyJbc/XYbngdwqRCI/AAAAAAAAEEY/bv_xv1OgTOguoL2adBclH7bqHty1FU_0ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="316" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hItTxICyJbc/XYbngdwqRCI/AAAAAAAAEEY/bv_xv1OgTOguoL2adBclH7bqHty1FU_0ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog0.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The stage set features a large main stage with a groove in the back to hold a record album cover as a backdrop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cslzUYFfVEQ/XYbngZ_qR4I/AAAAAAAAEEU/A8e_pba00Poke2UAA-LwRqDRkJW4YkyrQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="373" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cslzUYFfVEQ/XYbngZ_qR4I/AAAAAAAAEEU/A8e_pba00Poke2UAA-LwRqDRkJW4YkyrQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It also has three elevated platforms, four guitar amps, and an overhead lighting truss with an <a href="https://amzn.to/31CNivI" target="_blank">LED Light Strip</a>. The only other additions were three pieces of 1/2" dowel rod to raise the platforms and a little paint. (I did not paint the surfaces that would touch the vinyl figures, as some finishes may deteriorate vinyl.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ff8Gflt99O0/XYbngN9e2VI/AAAAAAAAEEQ/QWFszviXvkIo_pzOJwj3cOTXVH66LYt8QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="388" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ff8Gflt99O0/XYbngN9e2VI/AAAAAAAAEEQ/QWFszviXvkIo_pzOJwj3cOTXVH66LYt8QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Some of the drummer figures come with a small drum set, but some do not. My EASEL design includes a bass drum and a pair of toms that can be glued together and painted for those ill-equipped drummers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2dX5-XPtIvw/XYbng6LSM7I/AAAAAAAAEEc/35asnTRB4lU6PQ2CJxsWpaqspv7qmAHJwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="385" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2dX5-XPtIvw/XYbng6LSM7I/AAAAAAAAEEc/35asnTRB4lU6PQ2CJxsWpaqspv7qmAHJwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/blog3.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I have Metallica, KISS, Guns n Roses, and Rush. Angus Young and Animal are sitting in for the missing original GNR members. I also have The Police and Wayne's World figures in my collection (not pictured). Thanks for checking out my project!<br />

<br />
I glued additional boards onto the back two rails so that those pedals would be elevated. I can easily step on the back row's switches without hitting the knobs on the front row of pedals.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IY_uYldFT80/XQm06Al-unI/AAAAAAAAECg/a89MN8sYXSMsbZOrxo9TiVU4qK6chRMlgCLcBGAs/s1600/blog3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IY_uYldFT80/XQm06Al-unI/AAAAAAAAECg/a89MN8sYXSMsbZOrxo9TiVU4qK6chRMlgCLcBGAs/s1600/blog3.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Make sure you lay out your pedals with cables so you can get good measurements for the overall size board you need. Consider making it a little bigger because we all know you will be adding more pedals right? If you plan to take it on the road, buy a case first, then make the pedal board to fit the case. My board ended up being about 12" x 30".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YhgXN3VlqlM/XQm06I1H_tI/AAAAAAAAECY/iPH9kow7tHAhg9Ifw54dS_Ld01upyOfHwCLcBGAs/s1600/blog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YhgXN3VlqlM/XQm06I1H_tI/AAAAAAAAECY/iPH9kow7tHAhg9Ifw54dS_Ld01upyOfHwCLcBGAs/s1600/blog2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Don't forget to add some <a href="https://amzn.to/2Rpf4HR" target="_blank">non-skid pads</a> to the bottom to keep it from sliding around, and to keep it from scratching floors. I used <a href="https://amzn.to/2KZnyo0" target="_blank">1" Industrial Strength Velcro</a> to secure the pedals to the board. I put the soft fuzzy side on the board and the scratchy side on the back of the pedals. <i>Note that you may need to remove some rubber pads from the bottom of your pedals.</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MNsNkhWQpbI/XQm06m2DKWI/AAAAAAAAECk/lFlp-Jn9_6c7ANwRWae_gJK7KxnnR7c5QCLcBGAs/s1600/blog4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MNsNkhWQpbI/XQm06m2DKWI/AAAAAAAAECk/lFlp-Jn9_6c7ANwRWae_gJK7KxnnR7c5QCLcBGAs/s1600/blog4.jpg" /></a></div>
<i><br /></i>
This was a fun project and it is nice to have all of my pedals organized and available for stomping at the tips of my toes. One thing is for sure, pedals are so much fun to collect that your pedal board will never be finished!<br />

In this video, I show how to make triangle, rectangle, pentagon, and hexagon pencil holders. Check out my video showing the process below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/42aZVMI-SJc/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/42aZVMI-SJc?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
The <a href="https://amzn.to/2MDgHD2" target="_blank">Wixey Digital Angle Gauge</a> makes it really easy to set the table saw blade to accurate angles. I wouldn't want to try making these without it. I put it on the table saw surface to zero it, and then put it on the blade to set it to the desired angle. It's also backlit so it is easy to read.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://amzn.to/2MDgHD2" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="355" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ApQHRpv-c6k/XP8uW2MI46I/AAAAAAAAEBw/HoQ7EIQdt-IbKn_YLtewWIPZ-02i_DhlACLcBGAs/s1600/blog1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
There are two ways to add the bottom. For option 1 on the left side of the picture below, I used the table saw to cut dadoes about 1/4" up from the bottom, then cut a bottom piece that fits inside the box. For option 2 on the right, I cut a base that you can glue the top onto. Both ways are easy to do, so it just depends on the look you are going for.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pSCtLIN3rkY/XP8uW1x7iBI/AAAAAAAAEB4/4oRCEk0sMhYfZRfe5NHLTQZhpS4gLH22QCLcBGAs/s1600/blog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="328" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pSCtLIN3rkY/XP8uW1x7iBI/AAAAAAAAEB4/4oRCEk0sMhYfZRfe5NHLTQZhpS4gLH22QCLcBGAs/s1600/blog2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
These Polygon Pencil Holders were fun to make and and they are perfect projects for small scraps that seem to pile up in the shop. They are easy to batch out for craft shows too. Try making a 7-sided pencil holder...I don't even know what that polygon would be called!<br />

This is a fun project that is easy to make using supplies from the home center. Watch my video, then read further for a list of supplies, instructions, and photos.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/b5AhluBJcNs/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/b5AhluBJcNs?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
Below is a list of supplies that I used on this project:<br />
<ul>
<li>One 15" length of a pine 1x12 board.</li>

<div>
Here are the basic instructions for this project:</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Cut six 37" stripes.</li>
<li>Cut seven 22" stripes.</li>
<li>Cut four 19" braces for the back.</li>
<li>Cut one 10.5"x15" panel. (Note: The 1x2's from the home center can vary in width. Measure the height of the seven short stripes and cut the panel to match.)</li>
<li>Round over the front edges with a 1/8" roundover bit in a router.</li>
<li>Use a blow torch to scorch the wood (if desired).</li>
<li>Stain three 37" stripes and four 22" stripes Scarlet Red.</li>
<li>Stain the panel True Blue.</li>
<li>Add the stars to the panel. I used my <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables X-Carve CNC Machine</a> and the <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL PRO </a>software to engrave the stars with a 90 degree V-Bit. <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/projects/tVvtFn5_ooaqV3lSjwssTQ?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my Stars project.</a></li>
<li>Glue the flag together using minimal wood glue to avoid lots of squeeze out.</li>
<li>Clamp the flag to pull it all together.</li>
<li>Attach the four braces to the back with glue and nails. Make sure one brace overlaps the joint between the union and the shorter stripes. Space them evenly.</li>
<li>Spray with a clear coat finish. I used Deft Clear Wood Finish Satin Lacquer.</li>
</ol>

If you don't have a CNC machine, check out these other options for adding stars to the panel:</div>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Paint and Stencil - Use a stencil to paint the stars. <a href="https://amzn.to/2McTfwj" target="_blank">Click here to order one for a 19.5"x37" flag.</a></li>
<li>Hand Carving - Print a paper template to use as a guide to carve the stars with a carving knife.</li>
<li>Dremel Tool - Draw the stars onto the panel using a template, then engrave them with a Dremel tool.</li>
<li>Laser Cut Stars - Glue on some laser cut stars. <a href="https://amzn.to/2W8TKvK" target="_blank">Click here to order a pack of 1.25" stars for a 19.5"x37" flag.</a></li>

Watch my video of the process and read further for more information and pictures.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/3xWkc4Mc3Ao/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3xWkc4Mc3Ao?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To make the birdhouse, I tilted my table saw blade to 45 degrees, then cut six 9" squares with bevels on all sides. I drilled a 1.5" hole in the front and glued together the sides and top.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MI7Zd8_dW6M/XOCBgUXES4I/AAAAAAAAEAA/En8XOKXvdkkdCB2wav148VBVdvaBmAb4gCLcBGAs/s1600/blog3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Carmichael Workshop Rubik's Cube Birdhouse" border="0" data-original-height="339" data-original-width="560" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MI7Zd8_dW6M/XOCBgUXES4I/AAAAAAAAEAA/En8XOKXvdkkdCB2wav148VBVdvaBmAb4gCLcBGAs/s1600/blog3.jpg" title="Carmichael Workshop Rubik's Cube Birdhouse" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I glued a cross piece in the bottom opening so that I would have something to screw the bottom to. I also drilled some ventilation/drainage holes inside the grooves on the yellow bottom piece.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WTMdQhayzFo/XOCBge_w08I/AAAAAAAAD_8/QgV5lcGHrFcrLW0rCZZ7tRdRIZmcgnzYQCLcBGAs/s1600/blog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Carmichael Workshop Rubik's Cube Birdhouse" border="0" data-original-height="314" data-original-width="560" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WTMdQhayzFo/XOCBge_w08I/AAAAAAAAD_8/QgV5lcGHrFcrLW0rCZZ7tRdRIZmcgnzYQCLcBGAs/s1600/blog2.jpg" title="Carmichael Workshop Rubik's Cube Birdhouse" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Just for fun to finish it off, I printed the classic Rubik's Cube logo on a label and stuck it on.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tBRH_Kj-Ex8/XOCBgW-xQ6I/AAAAAAAAD_4/fjanxHDMoiY67hbvDU6GuRnfKaaHvsT7wCLcBGAs/s1600/blog1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Carmichael Workshop Rubik's Cube Birdhouse" border="0" data-original-height="360" data-original-width="560" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tBRH_Kj-Ex8/XOCBgW-xQ6I/AAAAAAAAD_4/fjanxHDMoiY67hbvDU6GuRnfKaaHvsT7wCLcBGAs/s1600/blog1.jpg" title="Carmichael Workshop Rubik's Cube Birdhouse" /></a></div>
<br />
I made a display stand for it. It's just a square piece of plywood with three boards glued on in the shape of a triangle. It will probably remain on display in my shop with all of my other crazy birdhouses. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7_qb6KGgwLGsiRqaoKDFEVVllpjdRpJD" target="_blank">Click here to check those out too!</a><br />

It's hard to believe that was over 30 years ago! I think it's past time to build a display frame for it. I put my <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables X-Carve CNC Machine</a> to work to make a cool Van Halen striped frame out of cherry and maple. Watch the video below, then read further for more details and pictures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/GoFZXNfK-SY/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GoFZXNfK-SY?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
This is a CD single for the song Black and Blue from Van Halen's OU812 album. It is signed by Eddie, Alex, Michael, and Sammy. Van Halen is my favorite rock band, so this is a cool thing to have.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-niA3isyoFpA/XJb9U1Ki7kI/AAAAAAAAD-s/rfsqql-2a40z6KV_Wd51FZdOK4MyzVBhQCLcBGAs/s1600/Blog3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="373" data-original-width="560" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-niA3isyoFpA/XJb9U1Ki7kI/AAAAAAAAD-s/rfsqql-2a40z6KV_Wd51FZdOK4MyzVBhQCLcBGAs/s1600/Blog3.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I kept the letter that Rockline sent with the CD to prove the authenticity of the autographs. It has a sketch of an old phone plugged into a boombox to represent calling into a radio show, which looks dated but kinda cool.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H_lYI42QIG0/XJb9U5t7iVI/AAAAAAAAD-o/gxxgM-CtduQYVjLtWddx5C9nA9LQopjtgCLcBGAs/s1600/Blog2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="373" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H_lYI42QIG0/XJb9U5t7iVI/AAAAAAAAD-o/gxxgM-CtduQYVjLtWddx5C9nA9LQopjtgCLcBGAs/s1600/Blog2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I had to be really careful when preparing the blank for this project. The <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">X-Carve</a> is very accurate, so my frame had to be perfectly square so that the CNC could carve the stripes in the correct place and centered around the frame border.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rigx5g293t0/XJb9VgmQqzI/AAAAAAAAD-4/GQkzwOgdKYY_oSTJBpaca49zhxVnDHMFACLcBGAs/s1600/Blog5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="373" data-original-width="560" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rigx5g293t0/XJb9VgmQqzI/AAAAAAAAD-4/GQkzwOgdKYY_oSTJBpaca49zhxVnDHMFACLcBGAs/s1600/Blog5.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The frame looks great in the EVH corner of my office. I should have framed this CD 30 years ago! Oh well, better late than never. I hope this project gives you some ideas for framing autographs or other memorabilia. It's made from <a href="https://www.homedepot.com/p/Barrette-1-in-x-4-in-x-8-ft-Furring-Strip-Board-Lumber-75800807/304600545" target="_blank">1x4 furring strips</a> and can be built using limited tools. Watch my video, then read further for details and download my plan to make one yourself.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/IIV90u5wicA/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/IIV90u5wicA?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
This project requires a minimum of eight 8-foot 1x4 furring strips that are readily available at the home center. Take your time and be selective when you pick out the boards. Make sure they are straight and check for any defects. I suggest buying one or two extra boards since they are so inexpensive, in case you discover defects later or you make a mistake.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You can also use a hammer and nails or screws. Note that the furring strips can vary in width a little, so always measure your actual pieces in case you need to adjust the plan. I used <a href="https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-2-in-x-1-ft-Twisted-Manila-Rope-70376/206085275" target="_blank">1/2 rope</a> for handles and a pair of <a href="https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-3-in-Zinc-Plated-Strap-Hinge-2-Pack-15289/202034111" target="_blank">strap hinges</a>. He asked that makers from all over the world submit ornaments for the tree, which will be given to <a href="https://thekidsnetwork.org.uk/" target="_blank">The Kids Network</a>. I thought it would be fun to make a miniature guitar ornament, so I designed one for the CNC machine. Check out my project video below, then <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7_qb6KGgwLHtbY7bB-dJBSr5Cj75WbIZ&jct=ygSLGqMcl4-drkm7W-kbeqfS_F5YeA" target="_blank">click here to watch the playlist for the Maker Tree project</a>.<br />

<br />
This guitar ornament is made from red cedar. I traced an image of the guitar in Microsoft Visio. Then I exported it as an SVG file and imported that into the <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/easel?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables Easel</a> software. I clicked on each object and set the depth of cut to add dimensions, then I sent it to the <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">X-Carve CNC Machine</a> to bring the guitar to life. I glued on a piece of brown material for a strap. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!<br />

I collect drum Christmas ornaments, but I don't have one made of wood, so I made one. Watch my project video below, then <a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLy11Xbe5BExKVRT77mL8nPcPsx-t_7-uW" target="_blank">click here to view the other entries</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/djgatton" target="_blank">subscribe to Dave's channel</a>. Thanks to Dave and the sponsors for the challenge!<br />

<br />
This Drum Christmas Ornament is made from poplar and red cedar. I designed the project in the <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/easel?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables Easel Software</a> and cut it with the <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">X-Carve CNC Machine</a>. <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/projects/qAaYm4u9Zh761k0ue4R72g?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my Easel project.</a> I sprayed it with Satin Deft Clear Wood Finish Lacquer, then used three strands of gold thread in an X pattern around the drum (because the thread was so thin). I really like how it turned out. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year!<br />

It cost $126 with free shipping so I couldn't pass that up. Check out my video of the installation then read further for more info.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/N2IDDO0nzJI/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/N2IDDO0nzJI?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
Installation could not be any easier. Pick a spot to hang it from the ceiling where it will be out of the way but near an outlet. The power cord is about 78" long. The instructions say to position it at least 3 feet from a corner. It is easy to move it to a different spot if needed later. It comes with inner and outer filters and all of the hardware needed to install it.<br />
<br />
Screw the wood screw hooks into the rafters in a 12"x14" rectangle pattern. Note that the hooks on the top of the unit are not centered on the unit, in case you are working around obstructions and need to hang the unit in a specific location.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cQQ1aS5zvOM/XB1WQXblZPI/AAAAAAAAD68/xlvk8-IRUloRG6TeE3-viS8F-OB3zxQowCLcBGAs/s1600/blog1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cQQ1aS5zvOM/XB1WQXblZPI/AAAAAAAAD68/xlvk8-IRUloRG6TeE3-viS8F-OB3zxQowCLcBGAs/s1600/blog1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Thread the nuts onto the 4 rubber coated hooks and screw them onto the unit at about the same height. Tighten the nuts against the unit to lock them down.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HCGOuYYIV2U/XB1WQQDLAZI/AAAAAAAAD64/1OOxl89VvJIfVbqBXC7kHGPY4INIKT4AACLcBGAs/s1600/blog2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="317" data-original-width="560" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HCGOuYYIV2U/XB1WQQDLAZI/AAAAAAAAD64/1OOxl89VvJIfVbqBXC7kHGPY4INIKT4AACLcBGAs/s1600/blog2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Hang the chains from the ceiling hooks, then carefully lift the unit and hang it from the bottom of the chains by the rubber coated hooks. Plug it into the nearest outlet. Insert the batteries into the remote control and enjoy your new clean air!<br />

In this video, I used an <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">X-Carve CNC Machine</a> made by <a href="https://www.inventables.com/?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Inventables</a> to cut seven sections of wood that get glued together to make up the body of the fire engine. Check it out and read further for more details.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/8KFo_hYx59M/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8KFo_hYx59M?feature=player_embedded" width="560"></iframe></div>
<br />
I used Microsoft Visio to design one side of the fire engine based on a picture of one at our local fire department. I copied this drawing and simply flipped it horizontally to create the right side. Then I designed five more sections that would be sandwiched in between. It was a fun challenge to see what details I could add by changing the outline of the cut. I added lights, axles, a back panel, and a mount for the water canon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vyFw11joVDo/W_OGBy9ojQI/AAAAAAAAD5o/6CTRPd2T2FAOUgSvefVeWKtBHkVXWVlKgCLcBGAs/s1600/blog1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Visio Fire Engine Design by The Carmichael Workshop" border="0" data-original-height="296" data-original-width="560" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vyFw11joVDo/W_OGBy9ojQI/AAAAAAAAD5o/6CTRPd2T2FAOUgSvefVeWKtBHkVXWVlKgCLcBGAs/s1600/blog1.jpg" title="Visio Fire Engine Design by The Carmichael Workshop" /></a></div>
<br />
I saved the designs as SVG files and imported them into <a href="https://www.inventables.com/projects/serving-tray--2?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">EASEL</a>. Did you know you can create a free EASEL account and open my Fire Engine project to see how it is designed? <a href="http://easel.inventables.com/projects/ncXnlhUBbXEsvttGQNmh1Q?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">Click here to open my EASEL Fire Engine Project.</a><br />

<br />
The accuracy of the <a href="https://www.inventables.com/technologies/x-carve?ref=CarmichaelWorkshop" target="_blank">X-Carve CNC Machine</a> really shines on a project like this. Each piece was precisely cut and lined up perfectly with the others. I used brad nails to help keep them aligned during assembly. Very little sanding was required to smooth out the joints.<br />
<br />

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h6l1TG321Lg/W_OGB1SYYzI/AAAAAAAAD5s/zGsVTMc62ZQVqy-Tyr1iQaQ3VS6_BUBUACLcBGAs/s1600/blog3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Wooden Toy Fire Engine by The Carmichael Workshop" border="0" data-original-height="317" data-original-width="560" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h6l1TG321Lg/W_OGB1SYYzI/AAAAAAAAD5s/zGsVTMc62ZQVqy-Tyr1iQaQ3VS6_BUBUACLcBGAs/s1600/blog3.jpg" title="Wooden Toy Fire Engine by The Carmichael Workshop" /></a></div>
<br />
I purchased <a href="https://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Painting-Surfaces/Wood/Birch-Wood-Furniture-Buttons---1-4%22/p/23248" target="_blank">1/4" and 3/8" Furniture Buttons</a> from the hobby store to use for gauges. I planned ahead of time and included the correct size holes for these in the design.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YL-KlQdLZ64/W_OGCb7Qx5I/AAAAAAAAD5w/W5r3XqhLvzAOIdsnE-rpb2KlH4TbpMAPQCLcBGAs/s1600/blog4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YL-KlQdLZ64/W_OGCb7Qx5I/AAAAAAAAD5w/W5r3XqhLvzAOIdsnE-rpb2KlH4TbpMAPQCLcBGAs/s1600/blog4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I also purchased <a href="https://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Painting-Surfaces/Wood/Wood-Axle-Pegs---1-3-16/p/27041" target="_blank">11/32" Axle Pegs</a> from the hobby store to hold on the wheels. The correct size holes for these are in the axel design where the wheels are attached. The wheels have a slightly larger hole in them so they will spin freely. A washer is used as a spacer between the wheels and the fire engine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JxKqY2TfxxE/W_OGCr2zvOI/AAAAAAAAD50/3oGR9WG3gQoh55IsPZxtn5-_1YW8un00gCLcBGAs/s1600/blog5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="315" data-original-width="560" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JxKqY2TfxxE/W_OGCr2zvOI/AAAAAAAAD50/3oGR9WG3gQoh55IsPZxtn5-_1YW8un00gCLcBGAs/s1600/blog5.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
I used Metallic Silver, Gloss Apple Red, and Gloss Black spray paint to paint the larger sections of the fire engine. Acrylic paints from the art store were brushed on for the details. It took several coats of paint to cover the base colors. This is a great project for practicing painting.<br />
<br />

<br />
My wife really likes the fire engine. I wonder what the other people at the fire department will think of it. Perhaps they will enjoy the Atomic Fireballs that are stuffed in the back compartment! Thank you to all of the Fire Department Personnel out there who have committed their lives to helping people every day!<br />
